Part 2: Bobmanbob speaks to Crimsonland developer 10tons about their upcoming cyberpunk-themed shooter Neon Chrome and shares some sneak-peak screenshots and gameplay footage. Click here for part 1.
BOB What were the scariest, most exciting and happiest moments during Neon Chrome's development lifecycle?
10t "I don't think there were any scares. We did make some design changes and pivots, but that happens basically in every game's development. Lot's of exciting moments, like seeing major pieces of technology come alive, like the current versions of the level generators, and graphics stuff. We use our own engine, and this is our first 3D game, so there was a certain amount of raw engineering that had to be done. It wasn't exactly a singular moment really, but the most exciting bit was probably when we went into Steam beta a couple of months ago and learned that people really love the game. And right about now we're happy, having the game done and first release less than a week away. We hope to be even more happy after launch, seeing people like the game and sales figures in the higher end of expectations rather than lower :)"
BOB 10tons has released dozens of games across multiple formats. If you had to boil your success down to 2 or 3 factors, what would they be?
10t "We've been great at picking appropriately scoped projects, and polishing them to a highly competitive degree. We also get games done and released with quite a solid routine, we seldomly overshoot our schedules to a ridiculous extent. Rolling fully with our own tech also helps, as we get to choose exactly which platforms and when we support. This paid off most lately with PS4, where we got to release a bunch of games at a very early phase. Not having a lot of competition helps with discoverability! And, of course, being on so many platforms with so many games in itself is a completely different situation than having a game or two on iPhone or in Steam."
BOB What would you say are the biggest challenges independent developers face today?
10t "Discoverability, which is a consequence of the extreme amount of competition. By and large people buy what they see on the store of their device, and there's only so many prominent visibility slots in any store. If your game doesn't show up in those slots, you're facing an uphill battle with getting people to discover your game."
BOB Are you confident that Neon Chrome will satisfy neon nuts AND connoisseurs of chrome? Joking aside, what was the thinking behind the name?
10t "Coming up with great names for games can be really difficult sometimes! The massive amount of games out there doesn't make it any easier, as so many names are already taken. We came up with dozens of potential names for Neon Chrome, and as cheeky as it is, there's just some ring to it. It stuck, and of course it ticks the relevant boxes of what we're looking for in a game name. People probably think cyberpunk when the hear it!"
BOB Lastly, do you have any tips for new players when Neon Chrome is released on Steam this April 28th?
10t "Yes, two crucial tips: buy it, and type a user review :) Seriously though, check it out to see if it's something you might like. If you end up buying it, a good way to get a leg up on things is to just go boldly and explore the game. Don't worry about dying, just try out different weapons, abilities and classes to see which ones work for you. Loot money and upgrade your stats for the first hour or so, and only then start taking serious stabs at reaching and defeating the first boss. By then you know the ropes and are ready to discover all the new stuff the game keeps revealing."
Huge thanks to the 10tons team for taking the time to answer these questions during the most hectic phase of Neon Chrome's development cycle. Look out for the full review right here, very soon!
